This fantastic, towering amethyst “cathedral” geode is lined with glistening purple crystals. It is an absolutely gorgeous, show-stopping piece - the photos do not do it justice! The crystals are are in excellent condition and it has a natural back (unlike many cemented pieces).
Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz. The name comes from the Ancient Greek a- ("not") and methustos ("intoxicated"), a reference to the belief held in Ancient Greece that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness.
The purple colour in amethyst is due to irradiation of iron ions present as impurities in quartz (SiO2). Amethyst is the traditional birthstone for February.
