This is a great example of one of the most interesting and visually stunning forms of pyrite, known as a "sun" or "dollar". It was discovered in a coal mine near Sparta, Illinois USA, embedded in 300 million-year-old deposits. It is believed that pyrite suns form as concretions that are flattened out under high pressure, growing outward from the centre in a radiating fashion. The mine where it was found is no longer operational; thus, these unique minerals formations are becoming difficult to acquire.
An excellent and affordable addition to any mineral collection!
