This exceptional skull comes from a prehistoric sea lion (Allodesmus gracilus) and was discovered in the famous Sharktooth Hill Bonebed near Bakersfield, California, USA. Any Allodesmus fossils, other than minor bone fragments, are very scarce. This incredible specimen was a once-in-a-lifetime find. It is surely one of the most complete skulls of this genus ever discovered.
The preservation is remarkable: it is unrestored except for a minor section of the upper braincase.
Age: Middle Miocene - 12 to 16 million years old
Size: 14 inches long x 6.5 inches wide (35.5 cm x 16.5 cm)
